With a total refining capacity of 4.5 million tonnes per year (around 33 million barrels), OMV-Petrom’s Petrobrazi refinery near Ploiesti City is one of the most important refineries in Romania. To satisfy the demands of the national market and to bring processes and products into line with international standards, OMV-Petrom is investing heavily in its modernisation.
However, the documentation of the 78-year-old refinery was far from ideal in terms of quality and coverage. In order to facilitate the ongoing planning and modification work, OMV-Petrom decided to have 3D as-built documentation produced.
Romanian company International Partner Buro (IPB) was awarded the contract. IPB was one of the first in the country to own a FARO Focus3D. Founded in March 2007, IPB’s team of 15 specialists work in topography, 3D laser scanning, land survey, cartography, geodesy and UAV Photogrammetry.
The FARO Focus3D is a high-speed Terrestrial Laser Scanner (TLS) offering one of the most efficient methods for 3D measurement and 3D image documentation. In only a few minutes, this 3D laser scanner produces dense point clouds that provide incredibly detailed 3D colour images of large-scale geometries. Multiple scans from different positions can then be automatically placed to create a cohesive point cloud, resembling an exact measureable copy of even the most complex and large structures.
The Petrobrazi project involved a site area of almost 71 hectares, and required accurate modelling of all the incorporated infrastructure, including tanks, pipes, racks, struts and columns. On a project of this size (over 6,000 scans were needed to survey the site accurately), Focus3D reduces the potential for operator error, speeding up workflow through a mixture of intuitive software and easy-to-use touchscreen controls.
Furthermore, the 120-m range of the Focus3D helps to reduce the number of scans needed to capture all the necessary information. Once the survey is complete, the point clouds are processed in FARO Scene and then the data is imported into PointSense Plant. This dedicated plant-modelling software is a powerful tool that will now be central to all future planning and execution processes on the Petrobrazi project.
IPB recognise that this job would have been impossible to accomplish with traditional methods; in a refinery especially, it is not always possible or safe to climb pipes or scale the walls of a tank with a measuring tape or record accurately with a Total Station. FARO’s Laser Scanner Focus3D renders with accuracy and detail that would have been impossible using traditional measurement systems and procedures.
