Valve and pump manufacturer Bifold has created a new tool to streamline the design and procurement of bespoke valve circuit systems
Bifold is a global supplier of the widest range of switching instrument valves and pumps in the oil and gas upstream and downstream sectors. Offering a range of high-tech valves and accessories, Bifold’s equipment has been proven to meet the demand of the industry’s most hazardous operating locations, including the icebound Arctic, ultra deepwater, corrosive and subsea environments.
Formed more than a century ago as a manufacturer of steam valves and gas detection lamps for use in coal mines, Bifold now designs and builds electro-hydraulic and pneumatic directional control valves and equipment used by the oil and gas industry. Having acquired Marshalsea Hydraulics in 2006, Bifold also offers a large selection of pumps, pump sets and pressure intensifiers along with other high pressure stainless steel hydraulic equipment.
As well as its primary manufacturing and test facilities in Oldham, UK the company also has offices in Houston and Singapore, and sales representatives on every continent.
The company has supplied to a number of major projects worldwide, with recent contracts including equipment for Akpo, Dolphin, Karachaganak, Kashagan, Sakhalin, South Pars and North East Al Dhabiya/Rumaitha (NEB).
Since 1987, the company has also worked on the development of valves which can be directly immersed in sea water. The result was the “technically superior” FPS10 range of shearseal type directional control valves. Fully seawater compatible, FPS10 products are able to operate on fluids with contamination levels greater than NAS 1638 Class 12, at depths of 3,000m and at working pressures of up to 1,035 bar.
Bifold also supplied landmark products including a 180°C, 20,000-psi valve for HPHT well SSSV control, and a 130°C, 10,000-psi, 3,000-m subsea valve.
The company’s latest innovation streamlines the process of creating bespoke valve circuits. Available as a free downloadable software tool, the Bifold Circuit Designer (BCD) allows users to design and order a bespoke modular solution or tubed valve circuit with ease.
Bespoke solutions can comprise of a series of valves, in any order or orientation (where applicable), which are deployed via a schematic drag-and-drop system. Completed circuits can then be exported and bought directly from Bifold as a modular solution, or as a list of separate valves. The BCD will provide all the required information to complete a project quote, including full part code, price, system description, performance, and lead time, along with associated documentation.
In designing their circuit, the system will automatically create a PDF schematic diagram and description which can be sent with a quote. Users with Solid Edge ST6 and above can also create a 3D model and dimensional drawing. As each system is built up in the software, the system properties will automatically update to show the weight and flow performance of the design. This can be useful to verify that the design will match the required flow performance based on the desired specification.
Users can organise and manage multiple projects at once using the Project Centre. To aid the design and ordering process, Bifold has already included more than 3,500 systems already configured, with even more new schematics added regularly.
